Note 1In 1822 he fled into hiding on Chios with his younger brothers and his sisters and their children. All were captured by Turks. Antonis was taken into slavery by an ex-employee of his father. He worked as a cabin boy and over time was able to buy the boat.
Note 2With his boat he was able to find and liberate all his sisters except two: one had vanished and the other returned years later to Chios. She had had two sons with her captor.
Note 3The sons had offered to look after her in Turkey in her old age but she chose poverty in Chios where they continued to visit her.
