Note 1Poisoned herself on the day Nazi armies entered Athens and died a few days later. Buried in her garden. Gifted author of stories for children. Friend of the poet Constantine Cavafy.
Note 2Diagnosed with polio in 1925 and increasingly handicapped. Passionately involved with the Greek republican MP and diplomat Ion Dragoumi (opposed to Venizelos) until his assassination after which she only ever dressed in black.
Note 3Her delightful house in Kiphissia, Athens, was presented in 1977 to the Benachi Museum by her daughter Alexandra who, following Penelope’s death had shared ‘Sovirale’ with her sisters Sophia and Virgina.
Note 4Spoke Greek at home and learnt English from nurses and French from governess, Victorine Dfuay. Spoke no Arabic despite living in Alexandria.
