Note 1Art Collector & Patron of Pre-Raphaelite painters. Director of the Bank of London and of the Crystal Palace Company, London, England. On his death in 1890 he left £28,874 to his sons Constantine, Luke and Alexander.
Note 2Came to London in 1815 or 1827. Used the surname Ionides from ca. 1830. Greek Consul-General in London 1854-66. Great benefactor of Greece. General of the Order of the Saviour signed by King George l of Greece.
Note 3Gave G. F. Watts his first commission in 1834. His portrait was painted by Watts as an individual (in 1840) and in four family group paintings. Also portrayed by Cousens, Meadows and Smithe. Painted in miniatures by Sir Denis Ross and an unknown artist.
Note 4One of the original four signatories for the lease of West Norwood Greek Enclosure in 1842. A Watts painting of Alexander and his family was bought in June 2005 by the Watts Gallery (Guildford) for £232,000.
