Note 1Canadian army 1914-19. During the London ‘Blitz’ in May 1940, Annie S D Maunder gave her ‘Maunder Butterfly Diagram’ to Stephen Ionides for safe-keeping. Stephen and his daughter Margaret later loaned this to Harvard College Observatory where it remains.
Note 2In the view of Tom Bogdan the circumstances surrounding his sudden death appear strange and perhaps sinister... it seems he may have been involved in clandestine work for the US government.
Note 3Wrote with his daughter ‘Astrolabes: Astronomy in Ancient Greece’, ‘Astronomy in Ancient Egypt’ and ‘Stars and Men’. Published numerous works.
Note 4After university he attended Cambourne School of Mines in Cornwall. Worked throughout the world, notably in Australia (with Herbert Hoover), Mexico and the USA.
Note 5Engaged in work with the U.S. Signal Corps of a secret nature at Charlotteville, USA, when he apparently suddenly died of pneumonia while visiting his daughter.
Note 5According to The Times, 1 Feb 1943, he died ‘after a short illness’.
