Note 1She was the seventh child with a twin sister Harriet, and other sisters Eliza, Nizza and Helen. Her uncle Jonathan Hardy was vice-consul chancellor at the (British?) embassy in Constantinople in the 1840s.
Note 2Brought up in Constantinople and married the banker Stephen Mavrogordato (a widower). On 10th Dec 1854 they are recorded as dining on HMS Queen, invited by Captain Michell.
Note 3Travelled throughout Europe and met Henrietta Iwan Muller in Berlin in Oct 1866. An eldest brother Philip drowned in 1864.
Note 4In 2007 Charlie Sarell said that Alice had a sister Eliza, married to Theodore Baltazzi. Sturdza believes that Theodore Baltazzi’s wife had other parents... This problem needs to be resolved...
Note 5Alice’s brother, Dr Richard Sarell, married Thalia, a niece of Stephen Mavrogordato, at the British Embassy chapel in Constantinople (an unsuccessful second marriage for Richard).
