MemoAccording to the 1871 Census the family has three servants: Elizabeth Day, 27, cook, Emily Mellor, 21, nurse, and Louisa Farsdike, 20, housemaid.
Note 1Appears to have moved with his wife and two elder children from Alexandria to Britain in 1859-60. The family had three servants in 1871 but their fortunes appear to have collapsed in the 1870s. Scarlatos was declared a bankrupt on 16 Jul 1880.
Note 2C. Mavrocordato, according to the 1881 Census was aged 54, born Constantinople and registered as at ‘the Greek priest’s house, Little Winchester Street, London’ – perhaps in receipt of charity?
Note 3Died destitute in a Chelsea work house and buried in a pauper’s grave in the Greek cemetery at West Norwood.

Note 1‘She was 75, the widow of Charles Nicolas Mavrocordato, a Retired Cotton Merchant’. Cause of death was ‘Senile decay ? Months Passive congestion of lungs 7 days, Syncope, Certified by C.H. McIbraith, M.A.’
Note 2Her daughter Christina appears to have been living with her mother and to have been unmarried at the time of her mother’s death. She also appears to have reported the death and to have bought the unmarked grave plot for her destitute parents.
Note 3In the 1891 Census she and her husband Charles (their name spelt Warwcordats) are of 14 Brampton Street, Chelsea, he aged 65 and no occupation listed, and she aged 57; both born in Constantinople.
Note 4In the 1901 Census she and her daughter Christina are in the household of Issac Cohen, a theatrical Manager, in Camberwell , Dulwich. Christina is a housekeeper and her mother Polyxene is a visitor, a widow aged 66, of Greek birth and nationality.
