Note 1Several of the motherless children of Jane Skene & Lloyd Bruce were sent to live with her uncle William Skene in Edinburgh who liked to take them swimming (even in his old age) and tell them tales of Highland history.
Note 2Jane aged 7 and Zoë aged 8 moved from Athens to Oxford with their paternal grandparents. Asked by Rossetti to pose for him. Taught to draw in Oxford by pre-Raphaelite William Riviere).
Note 3Among her descendants were the writer Verily Anderson and Verily’s daughter Janie Hampton (also a writer).
