Note 1Grand Drogoman of the Sultan 1796-99. Voivode (governor) of Moldavia (1797-1801 and 1806) and of Wallachia (various 1802-06). Participated in the reorganisation of the Turkish state. Escaped to Russia and died in exile in Kiev.
Note 2Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911 says he joined a conspiracy to liberate Greece. On its discovery he fled to Vienna but was pardoned by the Sultan and made Hospidar of Moldavia (1799).
Note 3In 1805 he escaped to St Petersburg, returning to Bucharest in 1806 with about 20,000 Russians in another failed attempt to liberate Greece.
