Note 2Sonia Simeonoglou (née Zarifi) notes that ‘Zaraf’ meant gentle/elegant and Zarifi was the Greek form of this name, dating from a time when the Turks allowed no surnames.
Note 3“The first Zarifi, who appears at the end of the 18th century, claimed his descent from Vori. His name “Celebi Kyr-Zarifi” first occurs as a resident not of Vori but of Istanbul, where he might have been born - GZ”
Note 4GZ believed George was baptised ‘Zarifi’ (fine/refined/gentleman) as a first name at a time when Muslim Turks deprecated surnames. Zarifi later became his surname.
