Note 1(Muzzala) According to David Calvocoressi and his father Peter, Matthew was briefly taken into slavery and was either redeemed or escaped following the Massacres of Chios. Argenti records his mother as Angerou (no surname).

Note 2According to Matthew, recorded by his grandson Pantias (John) Calvocoressi some 60 years later, Matthew was about 15 years old in 1822 and referred to a half-brother Pandely and younger siblings: Mavroudi, Zambelou, Zorzis and Argentou.

Note 4Matthew often used to tell his family the story of his experiences at the time of the massacre. These were first recorded on paper by his grandson Pandia c.1950...

Note 5... They have now been incorporated in full by Maria Christina Chatziioannou (Athens 2022) 'Sti Dini tis Khiakis Katastrophis (1822)'.
