Note 1(Araba) He says he was captured by the Turks in Mesta, Chios, on 18 Apr 1822, his release bought by a Stephen Vernatsa in Smyrna for 90 machmoutiedes. He left for Trieste and Livorno. On 24 Apr 1824, he sailed for Constantinople, arriving 28 Sep 1824.
Note 2The supposed five-month voyage from Livorno to Constantinople (!) in 1824, a letter from his sister Franga, dated 4 May 1822, places him in Constantinople, safely hidden by an English friend, aged 16.
Note 3Appears to have been known as ‘Stephanovich-Schilizzi’. Presumably the Zannis Stephanos Schilizzi who is recorded as being a Constantinople magnate who had three sons: Dimitrios, Ioannis and Pavlos who all came to London.
Note 4Bishop Timothy says he became a Russian subject at a town in the Sea of Asov so that he could trade safely in Constantinople. He adapted his name accordingly. Most Greek men in his position adopted Western Power nationalities that secured their positions.
Note 5On 7 Dec 1874 he bought a plot at the Hellenic Enclosure for his son Stephen buried the same day (he having been moved from elsewhere in the Enclosure. In 1911 ownership of this plot was transferred to the Elliadi family, Stephen having been moved again.
Note 5He created the St Stephen’s Chapel at the Greek Cemetery in Constantinople (Sisli Rum Mezerlik). Grand Officer of the Order of The Saviour.

Note 1(De Cosis) Died of pleurisy at 1.00 pm “with the greatest calm and courage, and showed great devotion to her religion”.
Note 2Her husband ordered that a memorial service be held every 25 January at the Church of St John in Constantinople. He exhorted his sons to ensure this took place and that if it were forgotten his sons would see that it occurred on the following Sunday.
