Note 1Or Vallianios. Described by Sturdza as évergéte. Founder of the National Library at Athens. His monument at West Norwood Cemetery was listed by English Heritage in 1993. Catsiyannis says he was not married and had no children...
Note 2He and his brother bought a steamship in 1880 called ‘Adelphi Vaglianoi’ and later launched 4 new vessels sold to Greek shipyards in 1890. Substantial donor to Greece, Cephalonia and the National Library of Athens.
Note 3Settled in London in 1858 where he founded a branch of Vagliano Brothers (mostly grain trade) at Gresham House, Old Broad Street, London. Church warden of the London Wall Church.
Note 4Left £500,000 cash on his death and asked for the interest to be used for charitable purposes on Cephalonia. Lost a court case against the Bank of England after sacking a director for forging his signature on cheques.
