Note 1Metaxa’s records say that he was the son of a George Metaxa and ‘of Syros’. Studied law in Athens. His first wife appears to have been Princess Eleni Cantacuzene.
Note 2Presumably this is the Dimitrios Metaxa who died suddenly in a taxi on his way home from playing bridge... not buried with his wife in West Norwood’s Hellenic Enclosure.
Note 3Greek chargé d’affaires in Berlin (1890-1892), ambassador in Belgrade (1892-1895), ambassador in London (1895-1908), ambassador in Rome (1908-1912). He was representing the Greek King in the Convention of the Hague in 1904.
Note 4He was general director of the Greek hospital ship ‘Albania’ during the Balkan Wars (1912-13) at the request Princess Mary Bonaparte. The ship was financed by Princess Mary and her husband Prince George of Greece.
Note 5Nikos Karabelas’ work suggests that Dimitrios also married a Princess Eleni Cantacuzene whose portrait was painted in 1912 and was for sale at Christie’s in 1994.
Note 5A personal friend of King Edward Vll. In 1916 was on board a vessel torpedoed by a submarine in the Mediterranean when he was rescued and taken to Alexandria.
