Note 1Ian Fleming, with whom he was at school at Eton, took Scaramanga’s name for an evil character in the ‘James Bond’ novel ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’. Took Holy Orders when in his fifties and became Rector of Abbotts Ann in Hampshire, England.
Note 2Although his citation for his Military Cross in World War ll exists, a cousin recounts a family legend saying George had it for ‘strangling Germans with piano wire’!
Note 3In fact he served in a commando unit in WWll operating, for example, in St Vaast Bay in Sep 1941 leading 1 Section of 5 Troop in Operation Deepcut. He was the subject of a portrait by V. Vicherkassoff.
