Note 1See Obituary in The Daily Telegraph 4 Apr 2012. He had a son and a daughter from his first marriage to Betty Lord and a son and two daughters from his second marriage to Mary Beardmore (all still living in 2012).
Note 2Won an MC while serving with T-Force, an élite army formation of Commandos known as 30 Assault Unit (30AU) whose aim in 1945 was to capture German technology, encryption materiel, scientists, etc., before they were destroyed or fell into Russian hands.
Note 3Equipped with nine recce cars he was ordered to take control (30 April 1945) of the seaplane and Luftwaffe experimental station at Lübeck-Travemünde area on the Baltic coast
Note 4Facing 4,000 resentful and unstable enemy forces and thousands of refugees fleeing the Russian advance, he not only successfully completed his mission but found himself accepting the surrender of 30 officers, 200 engineers and all buildings and equipment.
Note 5He then managed to arrange the feeding of 4,000 prisoners of war as well as hungry German civilians. For having completed his mission and having handled this chaotic situation calmly and efficiently he was awarded the MC.
Note 5The citation for his MC also paid tribute to the skill and determination with which he had kept six anti-tank guns in position for six days in Normandy despite constant sniping and infiltration by enemy patrols. Fachiri retired from the Army in 1946.
Note 5“He also served his apprenticeship on the cotton market before signing up in WW2. He went in on D-Day with the Liverpool Kings at Lion-sur-Mer, being awarded an MC.”
