Note 2In the 1901 Census for Norfolk, England, Edward Gilson was aged 37, born in London and his wife was Frances aged 32, born Croydon.
Note 3They had five children in 1901 (see Census). Dave Davenport says: “He was the second mate of a sailing ship outward bound from England which was carrying a deck cargo which covered the anchor bolt for one of the sheets controlling the sail...
Note 4... The sheet was hooked onto a lashing on the ship's rail. The lashing gave way and my grandfather was caught in his leg by the hook and swung over the ship's side...
Note 5... The ship put into a port and landed him where he went into hospital and had his leg amputated. Due to this accident he was unable to continue his career at sea...
Note 5... and became a Lloyd's Assessor and was posted to Buenos Aires where he was married and at least 3 of his 5 children were born.”
