NameColonel Arthur Stephen (Alexander) Mavrogordato OBE, 3C4R
Birth22 Nov 1886, Nicosia, Cyprus
Death1 Jan 1964, Barbados, West Indies
MemoAnother source says Trinidad. He died on holiday after a short illness, according to the notice in The Times 9 Jan 1964.
OccupationCommandant of colonial police in Palestine and Trans-Jordan, later Inspector-General in Trinidad & Tobago.
Note 1He seems have to have married first Margaret McAllister (who may have died in a lunatic asylum in Scotland) and second, in 1948, Olga Boos, who he met in the early 1930s in Port of Spain (having to wait until his first wife was dead).
Note 2According to Harriet Arthur, writing to CAL in 04-2007, he had an illegitimate son, Michael Stephen Arthur, conceived on a New York-Trinidad ship and born London 1936 to Margery Hombersley, whose father was an English-born Archdeacon in Trinidad.
Note 3As Chief Censor in Trinidad & Tobago he once banned the Calypso ("indecent and immoral dances, juicy songs"). He also suggested that the Star of David be used as the police emblem in Trinidad.
Note 4Unclear whether he is the man portrayed in a military/police style hat or whether this represents his father Alexander Mavrogordato (less likely). Equally it is unclear whether the father or son was holder of the OBE (the son seems more likely).
