Note 1According to his grand-daughter (in 2006) he changed his name to Veshnev because, as a descendant of Moldavian ruling princes, his life would have been in danger at the time of the 1917 Russian revolution.
Note 2‘After his death my grandmother handed over his enormous and valuable library and manuscripts to the Tolstoy's museum in Moscow of which he was a director’ (Central Literary Archives, Viborgskaya Street, Moscow 3).
Note 3His grand-daughter also says he spent 1914-1917 as an emigré in Paris and at some stage was imprisoned and in exile for his political views.
