Note 1Historian Peter Calvocoressi recorded in the 1980s that George’s grandmother was beaten to death during the Massacres of Chios. George was rescued by his father who bribed a Turk to release him. He was murdered in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1872.
Note 2George and his father escaped from the Massacres of Chios to Smyrna where a few months later George was sent alone to Baltimore, Maryland in the USA. There he was adopted by a retired soldier, Captain Partridge, and then joined the US Navy.
Note 3His second name, according to descendant, was Musalas.
Note 4In the Spring and Summer 2006 issues of the Norwich Record, he was included in a major study of this branch of the family by Professor Gary T. Lord of Norwich University (USA).
Note 5“George Musalas Calvocoressi came from Chios to the USA in 1824. At that time his name was ‘Americanized’ to Colvocoresses. The Colvocoresses family has had a very productive history in America ever since.”
