Note 1Chargé d’affaires in London (1862-64). Prepared the treaty ceding the Ionian Islands to Greece which he signed as plenipotentiary minister. Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs (1866-67, 1877-78, 1881-83, 1886).
Note 2Prime Minister (1875, 1880, 1882-85, 1886-90, 1892-93, 1893-95). Played an important part in the development of modern Greece, and can be counted with Capodistria and Alexander Mavrocordato as one of the most important Greek statesmen of the 19th century.
Note 3Repeatedly took the portfolios of Minister of the Interior, Finance, War alongside that of President of the Council. Lost the 1895 election. Went into voluntary exile in France, having ‘drunk to the dregs of the cup of the ingratitude of the Greeks’.
