Birth19 Mar 1871, Vienna, Austria
Death30 Jan 1889, Mayerling, Austria
Burial1889, Cistercian Monastery, Heiligenkreuz
Note 1Doomed lover of Archduke Rudolph of Austria. She and Rudolph were found shot at a hunting lodge at Mayerling though it is remains unclear whether her murder was part of a suicide pact.
Note 2She was for a large part of her life under pressure to fulfil her mother’s social aspirations which went as far as the Austrian Royal Court.
Note 3She was educated at the Silesian Covent in Vienna – an institute for the daughters of the nobility.
Note 4Aged about 16, she supposedly had an affair with an English officer in Egypt when the family went there for health reasons of her father.
Note 5Aged 17, she became obsessed by the 30 year-old Crown Prince Rudolph with whom she started an affair in late 1888. It appears he reciprocated but also had another lover, Mizzi Kaspar (1864-1907) to whom he proposed a suicide pact (rejected by her).
Note 5He proposed the same pact to Maria who ‘seemingly perceived the plans as the dramatic union in death of star-crossed lovers’.
