Note 1He killed Prince Nicolai Ghika in a notorious duel at Belle Croix, Fontainebleau on 26 Nov 1873, believing Ghika to be his wife’s lover. Ghika died of a thigh injury the following day.
Note 2Sentenced to four years in prison. This was the last fatal duel in Paris and figured in a film by the Lumières brothers: ‘Duel aux Pistolets’ (1898).
Note 3His wife Nathalie, daughter of the Romanian finance minister, wanted a divorce and took their young son to Romania. Soutzo tried to abduct the three year-old but was stopped at the border.
