Note 1Served in WWl in which he appears to have been wounded. Hampshire Regt. (Special Reserves) attached to Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Three times mentioned in despatches for gallant service. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order on June 18th. 1917.
Note 2Dispatches: Went forward under fire to reconnoitre a crater after a mine had exploded under a trench at Railway Wood, 17 Oct 1915 (despite a bullet passing through his cap) and by personal example under fire kept his men at work producing a safe trench.
Note 3Dispatches: Led his company to their objective despite heavy fire and despite being injured on three separate occasions during the advance. Consolidated his position and continued to command until finally incapacitated.
