Note 2The marriage with Sarah Bernhardt did not survive the couple’s arguments and infidelities. He was a notorious drug-addict with pretensions as an actor; she was obsessed by him until his death despite the improbability of the relationship.
Note 3He appears to have had two illegitimate children, the second, Teresa (1889 Paris - 1967 Athens), being a model for Picasso and a mistress of Ernest Hemingway. She was raised in Adrianople, Thrace and lived there under another name 1889-1916.
