Note 1Created a baronet (KCMG) 9 Jul 1883 at Queen Victoria’s insistance, against the wishes of the British Foreign Office: he had allowed some of his warehouses in Alexandria to be converted to a hospital by the British army during the 1882 Urabi Uprising.
Note 2He and his wife were the object of much ridicule among the Cavafy family for their pretensions after he received his knighthood. Though they were among the social leaders of the Alexandrian community he was renowned for his meanness.
