Note 2Pure speculation: Was Eustratius the father of the renowned Ottoman statesman, minister, diplomat and Vizir, Ibrahim Edhem Pascha (1819-93)? Edem was apparently born on Chios and the son of a Scaramanga. He was kidnapped during the Chios massacres...
Note 3... but he was adopted by a future Grand Vizier, Koca Hüsrev Mehmed, and brought up as a Muslim. Ibrahim Edhem did not deny his pure Greek origins but down-played any Greek association...
Note 4... Most wealthy captured Chiots were held by Turks for ransom but if Edhem was the son of Eustratius Scaramanga (already hanged by the Turks) there may have been nobody or no money to redeem him...
Note 5... It may be that Hüsrev adopted him precisely because he knew that the boy was effectively an orphan as a consequence of Turkish atrocities.
Note 5We don’t know if he had children. If he had children no record of them appears to have survived and they probably died, or were killed by the Turks in the 1822 Chios Massacres, or vanished into the slave markets of Asia Minor.
