Note 1(Caloupa) Writer of a diary recapitulating the events of the Chios Massacres and recording his later life in exile. Member of the Expeditionary Commission which attempted to liberate Chios in 1827. An Emmanuel Scaramanga lived on Syros.
Note 2He and his wife were apparently the subjects of separate portraits by an as yet unidentified artist (thought to be Russian, painting in Odessa in 1859) which were offered for sale on behalf of Scaramanga owners by Bonhams (London) in Spring 2007.
Note 3His lost a diary he had kept at the start of the Massacres of Chios and re-wrote some from memory. His is the only bitter account we know of concerning the appalling sufferings of the Chiot families.
Note 4He is very critical of the Chief Demogeront, Michael Vlasto, concerning the arrangement to provide the Pasha with hostages (on a rotating basis) selected from the principal ‘noble’ families.
