Note 1A close friend in her widowhood was Col. Frederick Beddington (1896-1979) who spent much time at Slaley Hall and was a keen and talented water-colourist.
Note 2She transformed the 1,000 acres of Slaley Hall’s sporting estate into a conservation and natural refuge for wildlife. No particular policy was adopted - merely letting nature develop alongside forestry and grassland agriculture.
Note 3Several hundred acres of additional and outlying land (e.g. moorland) had been acquired for shooting but was not part of the Slaley Hall Estate.
