Note 1Known to her family as 'Divine Wisdom' - a reference to the Greek priests' exhortation before the gospel reading: 'Sophia -Orthi'.

Note 2According to Dominie Vlasto she once said, regarding marriage, to a group of girls:"Ah, my dears, I'm glad to find you congratulating Maria. She's a very sensible girl. You must all try to do as she has done - aim high but take what you can get."

Note 3The Ralli family were apparently horrified when he married Catina. He died four years later leaving her impecunious and with a baby who was born and died after his death. She took Julia and Strati to Liverpool where her brother Aristide Cornelios lived.

Note 4Catina may have had a sister who married someone called Abbot. She said she wished to be buried in Allerton Cemetery "because the air is so good up there."
