Note 1In 1785 the emperors Joseph II of Austria and Catherine the Great of Russia decided on the destruction of Turkey while Alexander prepared a plan for the independance of Greece.
Note 2Great Drogman to Sultan Abdul Hamid (1771), suspended the Sultan’s order for a general killing of Greeks. Named Voivode (governor) of Wallachia (09-1774 - 10-1782 and 08-1796 - 11-1797) and Moldavia (12-1786 - 04-1788).
Note 3Tortured and beheaded in Constantinople. When the Sultan declared him a rebel, he was arrested, tortured, beheaded and his huge fortune was expropiated. His governement was considered the ‘Golden Age of Wallachia’.
Note 4Negotiated the Russo-Turkish Treaty of Kaïnardji (1774). Sturdza says that he was probably the first to make secret contact with Russia to achieve the overthrow of Ottoman rule.
