Note 1Flight lieutentant in 601 Squadron, RAF. His family had a holiday house at Constantine Bay, North Cornwall, England, still used by his widow and friends until 2003.
Note 2He was able to become a pilot like his father, thanks partly to his school friend George Cleaver, whose family owned a plane. He had his pilot's licence by the age of 17 before leaving Eton.”
Note 3One of a group of wealthy young men, like his future brother-in-law Richard ‘Dick’ Demetriadi, who learnt to fly while at Eton and then formed the nucleus of 601 Squadron together.
Note 4601 was the first Auxilliary Squadron, known as the ‘milllionaires’ squadron’ and perhaps founded at White’s Club by Lord Grosvenor. He travelled widely before returning to England and “falling madly in love” with Amalia.
Note 5Shot down nine enemy aircraft. Selected for the British team in the 1936 Winter Olympics but a ski-jump accident prevented him from competing.
