Note 1RAF (Aux.) Flying Officer with 601 Squadron, shot down and killed in the Battle of Britain in a ‘Hurricane l’ during combat off Portland, England. According to CWGC records he was ‘attached to the King’s Estate at Sandringham’.
Note 2One of a group of wealthy young men, like his future brother-in-law Willie Rhodes-Moorhouse, who learnt to fly while at Eton and then formed the nucleus of 601 Squadron together.
Note 3601 was the first Auxilliary Squadron, known as the ‘milllionaires’ squadron’ and perhaps founded at White’s Club by Lord Grosvenor for young officers of considerable independent means.
Note 4Shot down in action off the Dorset Coast very early in WWll. His body was washed ashore in France where he was buried.
