Note 1Appears to have moved with his wife and two elder children from Alexandria to Britain in 1859-60. The family had three servants in 1871 but their fortunes appear to have collapsed in the 1870s. Scarlatos was declared a bankrupt on 16 Jul 1880.

Note 3Died destitute in a Chelsea work house and buried in a pauper’s grave in the Greek cemetery at West Norwood. At death recorded as ‘Carolos J Mavrogordato’.
Note 4A great-granddaughter married the principal of the University of London in the 1940s. George Vassiadis believes that he was the son of a Nicholas Mavrogordato (Vitella branch). We are not convinced.
