NamePanayotis Mamona Nikousis Palaiologos
Birth1613, Chios, Greece/Hellenes
Death1673
Note 1Born on Chios, of modest origins, he studied medicine, mathematics and astronomy at Padua University. As Grand Drogoman in 1666 he handled, with Grand Vizir Küprüli, the capitulation of the Venetians on Crete and the acquisition of the island by Turkey.
Note 2In return he acquired extraordinary privileges for the Grand Drogoman: the revenues of the island of Mykanos, exemption from all taxes and trade duties, to be judged only by the Grand Vizir, the right to wear a beard (previously forbidden to non-muslims).
Note 3Furthermore, he achieved the Grand Drogoman’s right to sole audience with the Sultan (not available to any foreign ambassador) and the right to travel with a mounted escort carrying a prayer rug (as was the right of the Pashas).
Note 4Sturdza says that he had the useful ability of being able to win the Sultan’s confidence, even being a member of his immediate entourage, while remaining resolutely pro-Greek. Panayotis Nikousis adopted the name Mamona.
