World Magazine – Info & Contributors
00-00-1987

World Magazine was launched in the United Kingdom in May 1987 and later internationally. It contained an ecletic mix of features on natural history, wildlife, science, astronomy, travel, anthropology, history, archaeology and environmental matters. It appealed to readers of all ages who described themselves as interested in 'everything in the world around them'. It also broke new ground in terms of excellent design, photography and reproduction – winning, as a consequence, Britain's 1988 PPP Design Awards in its first year of publication.
The remarkable success of World Magazine owed much to its contributors who were generally young. They came with fresh ideas and, since few of them had worked on national publications, remained largely 'uncorrupted'. Above all they were enthusiastic about their subjects and their work and this communicated itself to our readers. Sadly World Magazine was acquired, very expensively, by BBC Publications who saw it as a severe threat to its own stable of wildlife and travel magazines. Entirely failing to understand the reasons for the magazine's success, the BBC treated it as a 'travel mag' and thought that the introduction of celebrity writers and populist features would increase its sales still further. Unsurprisingly World Magazine died in the hands of the BBC within a couple of years.
