Note 1He grew up at Tiltwood House, a fifteen-bedroomed mansion on the 500 acre Tiltwood Estate, in Crawley Down, Worth, which was bought and enlarged by George Emmanuel Scaramanga.
Note 2Lieutenant in Royal Flying Corps (22nd Squadron) during WWI. He was First World War Greek-British flying ace credited with twelve aerial victories. Shot down in action.
Note 3He was severely wounded in a dogfight and lost consciousness before he took down his twelfth and final enemy aircraft, a Pfalz D.III, on 10 July 1918. He died of his wounds the same day.
Note 4Wikipedia says: ‘Despite having been credited with twelve aerial victories and seriously wounded twice, the second time fatally, Lieutenant James John Scaramanga does not appear to have been decorated.’
