Note 1(Muzzala) According to David Calvocoressi and his father Peter, Matthew was briefly taken into slavery and was either redeemed or escaped following the Massacres of Chios. Argenti records his mother as Angerou (no surname).
Note 2According to Matthew, recorded by his grandson Pantias (John) Calvocoressi some 60 years later, Matthew was about 15 years old in 1822 and referred to a half-brother Pandely and younger siblings: Mavroudi, Zambelou, Zorzis and Argentou.
Note 3Matthew, on his deathbed, dictated his memories of the Chios Massacres to his grandson Pantias, published in Greek, by his son Leonis in 1902 as: ‘Grandfather’s Story’.
