Note 2When his brother Eustratius was found guilty of forgery and deception at the Old Bailey on 5 Mar 1894, John stated that he had been a bankrupt in Scotland since Sep 1892 owing about £18,000.
Note 3He stated that he left all his financial affairs in the hands of his brother Eustratius and that he knew nothing about his finances until he was bankrupted.
Note 4It is not clear whether he and Eustratius colluded in the forgery and deception though John was not charged, appearing only as a defence witness.
