Note 1(Chaviara-Chatta) Presumably the E. P. Ralli (‘son of Pantaleone’) whose Camille Silvy portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Note 2He is described as of of Monte Carlo. He had two marriages according to 1935 press reports. His first wife died young and his second two years prior to his own death.
Note 3He was arrested in Calais on 31 Jan 1894 on a British warrant, charging him with forgery and deception (forging his bankrupt brother’s signature on a deed). Held in prison in France from 16 Dec 1893 to 31 Jan 1894.
Note 4He was in financial difficulties and went to Australia in 1892 but returned soon after, probably thinking “his rich relations would settle” his debts. Their refusal may have led him to try raising money by forging his brother’s signature as a guarantor.
Note 5Found guilty at the Old Bailey 5 Mar 1894 but sentence respited. It is not clear whether there was active collusion between Eustratius and John in the forgery but this does seem a strong possibility.
