Note 2The 1881 Census shows George Gale (butler), Lettice White (housemaid), John Hignell (footboy, sic) and Eliza Burnham (underhousemaid) as domestic servants as well as Fanny Ward (née Hope, a young widow from Wales) recorded as a monthly nurse.
Note 3His portrait by Bernado Amiconi was to be sold by Bonhams, London, in 2018. His brother and sister, when children, also sat for Amiconi portraits. Amiconi’s portrait of Alexander’s mother ‘Madame P. Rodocanachi’ was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1863.
Note 4Presumably he is the A.P. Ralli who translated Dr Alexander Vlasto’s ‘History of the Island of Chios’ [Xiaka] from Greek to English and wrote an introduction.
